What She Makes : Campaign Launch

  • Donkey Wheel House 673 Bourke Street Melbourne, VIC, 3000 Australia (map)

Oxfam's new campaign, What She Makes, marks the crucial next step in the fight for fair fashion – living wages for the women that make our clothing. And we’re holding an exciting launch event to make you a part of this important conversation. Until now, ethical fashion's focus has stayed firmly on factories, fighting for women's rights and safety at work. That's still essential - but it's also only half the story.

The women making our clothes are being denied decent lives by being paid poverty wages. Their meagre pay means that once outside the factory, they are often unable to afford even the basics – enough food for their families and decent shelter to live in, no matter how hard or long they work.

What She Makes is about putting the spotlight on the lives and dreams of the women who make our clothes – and demanding that they be paid living wages. Wages that will ensure they can afford enough food, decent housing, education and medical costs, and be able to save for emergencies.

While many leading and iconic Australian fashion brands are enjoying big increases in revenue, the failure to pay a living wage is trapping the women who make our clothing in a cycle of poverty. The fashion industry can be a powerful ally for women's rights. It's time that includes a living wage.

Help us launch What She Makes over coffee, breakfast and what we're sure will be a lively and important conversation. Disability friendly access.
